A local scene – Road Safety in Malaysia
A fatal accident which happened to one of my close friends earlier this year triggered me to write this small article to NST, hoping that it would create awareness on the road safety issue, especially to those who are seated comfortably at the back seat of the vehicles. This article was published at the “Letters” section of the online nst web portal on 14 February 2006. Ironically, a few weeks later, I saw a road-safety campaign advertisement on the television on this very same issue – a child arriving at school with bruises on her face. She was previously playing at the back seat of the car while his father who was driving suddenly stepped on brake abruptly and causing her to be thrown to the front dashboard. I know that my article probably did not reach the Road Safety Department, or did it? Who says that an anonymous unknown writer like me can’t make a difference? I probably did ..even in a minimal way.
Buckle up, you in the back
Feb 14
I HAVE always wondered why countries such as the United States have laws requiring passengers at the back of a vehicle to wear seat belts, while in most countries, including Malaysia, only the driver and front passenger need to wear seat belts.
Will wearing a seat belt at the back seat save lives? The answer is a yes. When accidents occur, the passengers at the back are at risk of being injured or even killed due to their inability to respond in time, compared with a passenger or driver at the front. Those at the front have a better view of the road and traffic condition, and thus, are able to respond when an accident happens.
The back passengers are prone to be more relaxed. Some may be asleep and some enjoying a good chat.
They would be unable to do anything at all should an accident take place.
They face a greater risk of being thrown out of the seats or even the car.
There should be a rule to require backseat passengers to buckle-up as well? It could save more lives.

A local celebrity – Yvonne Foong
Here’s a teenager who deserves to be everyone’s local celebrity! Yvonne Foong is not just another average 20-yr-old teenager. Read more about her at http://www.yvonnefoong.com/about-the-author
I can’t remember how I stumbled across her website, but after spending more time understanding her situation and how she took the world with all the strength that she has, she deserves every single piece of respect that I have to offer! And today, when I decided to visit her blog again, tears filled my eyes and my heart as I saw what she wrote! She is going to sponsor a child – despite of her own financial needs for her own surgery!
I sincerely hope anyone who is reading this and could afford some monetory help, you should read this :

And a note to myself, I should look into my pathetic-savings account tonight and get my cheque book ready!
My writings have finally gone online!
A little rants about this humble soul..
I have always loved to write as long as I could remember.
I’ve been writing numerous articles to numerous local magazines, newspapers and online publications – mostly as an anonymous writer to express my few cents worth, with my not-so-competent command of english, I have been really glad to have the editors to fix my grammar mistakes and sometimes ‘beautify’ my articles before they are published.
Last year, I was featured in my company’s annual magazine, and one of the interview questions was “what do you like other than engineering?”. I didn’t have to think long before answering that question with a precise word “WRITING”. Two weeks later, I received the soft-copy of the magazine draft from the editor. While the photos of me posing at the staircase did not really turn out appealing, I really loved the way they wrote about me in just a short article. One of my favourite phrase was ‘an engineer who loves to write’. I never really looked at myself that way..The fact that I just love to write just comes naturally, and honestly I have not earned event a single cents from my writing contribution (except for some free copies of magazines, and some free calendars), i truly enjoy having this hobby. Yes, my daytime profession is a research engineer, and I do have to read a lot of technical datasheets, white papers etc. BUT I don’t write technical papers! I have written about almost everything but technical stuffs. My writings have gone to the most unexpected places – from road-safety campaigns, educational magazines, pet-lovers newsletters and even bridal magazines!
One thing that worth mentioned here is that I write everything local! When I say ‘local’ it merely means Malaysia. There are so much about Malaysia that is worth looking into, debated, argued, criticised or even sincerely praised! Is the grass always greener on the other side? I don’t think so. In fact, having gone to the other side of the fence, I can always see that Malaysia always have the greenest grass!
I only write about things which I believe would make a difference in someone else’s life..even the tiniest amount, as long as it matters. I don’t write gossips and I do not like to touch on religious or racial sensitive issues. I do not write fashion or latest trend as I believe there are many other important issues that mattered more than what-is-the-latest-style and how-to-apply-the-mascara-on-my-eyelash.
Why did I start this blog?
The idea of starting this blog came about when one of my friends told me that there are millions of writers starting their blogs online each day! Millions! I just have to be one of the millions! Blogging seemed to be the ‘in’ thing now. Though it is a very convenient way of writing, especially that the writers can remain anonymous, I do urge the bloggers out there to look up the Blogger’s Etique and try to be accountable for what they write.
